So if you've read my intro post, you'll know I'm writing a rumbelle superhero AU. I'm trying to plan it out before NaNoWriMo starts, but I've hit a snag- I don't know what superpowers to give Rum and Belle! I'm pondering on giving Belle the ability to fly, but she should probably have something else too. I've also toyed with giving Rum some form of telepathy, but that superpower would lead to a few plotholes in the storyline I've got so far (i.e. he'd discover Belle's secret identity far too quickly). I want to give them 2-3 powers each, and it's not just them who need abilities, but I need what they can do before I can plot out what everyone else can do and other major plot bunnies. So... what superpowers do you think Rum and Belle would have?

Well, i picture Rum with mind powers, but maybe not telepathy. How about moving stuff with his mind? or controlling people (a la the vampires from The originals)
With Belle I see her more as an empath, projecting feelings onto people (calming them, making them angry, etc) and a great capacity for learning stuff, super fast reading and photographic memory, that sort of thing.

Hmm... I think he has the ability to create illusions (maybe he makes it look like he's a sparkly imp) and maybe telekinesis (so he can move stuff about and fly, which is useful for superhero battles, and for when his ankle is playing up). I don't think Belle's going to be an empath, it's not a terribly useful skill narrative-wise... maybe photographic memory and telepathic projection (like, she can share an image with another person mentally, but needs to be in close contact to do so). How does that sound? Or is that a stupid superpower?

Yes to Rum's powers! he could save up a lot of money on the costume if he could project himself a sparkly disco lizard xD or imp.
Belle's powers don't sound stupid, it would be useful to trick people, but in a battle she needs one that is a bit more active too, like superspeed or flying as you had said earlier.

*Cracks knuckles* I think all the above sounds fascinating. Here are a few possible more. (I love helping with this kind of thing!) Rum: *Spiderman like powers- able to produce and use thread like material to bind, swing, create, etc. He could have a lasso of some sort (like wonder woman) that he is able to use for this kind of purposes, able to mentally manipulate it to his will. This is a great power for writing because you can make up a bunch of cool things for him to do with it. * Transportation Powers- this is kind of an inside joke to the whole everyone but Rum can travel between worlds or places with just a poof of smoke ( * Looking Different- Due to whatever power, he looks different than most heroes. There's some great story lines about Beast, Mystique and Nightcrawler throughout the xmen canon about how much they wish they could fit in but they are can't. He might get a bracelet from one of his other "heroes/villian" friends that lets him look normal but which also dampens his powers. I know this is part of the x-men evolution series and it had some great moments. * Absolutely no super powers- Just his brain, his once upon a time speed and agility and a large bank account. He may be in the twilight of his career and thinking about retiring until this new "hero" comes along and he has to stay out in the field (for whatever purpose best serve your plot!) * Healing factor- he doesn't age, he can heal himself- if you want a non limp , this could explain that or if you do want to keep that gem, that could be the plot point that either spurns his actions or occurs during the narrative * Precongition- ability to know or sense something before it happens. Belle * Superhuman Mental Prowess- able to read at the speed of light, retain all knowledge and able to use it correctly and efficiently. AKA- read how to pilot a plane, you can land a runaway jet, read a book on how to do open heart surgery, be able to perform it minutes later; watch a demo on fast forward of karate moves- BAM, you know karate. Stuff like that. This would be interesting, especially if she never realizes that she's super powered, she just thought her whole life that she was just a quick study. *Omni-Linguism- ability to speak and understand any language; Wonder Woman is a great example of this. * Super Quick Reflexes- Similar to Quicksilver, this would mean she would also work well with the quick mental prowess powers or augment it. *Astral Project- able to be in one place and send her mind and astral image to another * Able to touch something and know the history and who may have touched it- this would be kind of hard if they were roommmates. Or maybe she would always be careful to not touch his stuff for that reason, or wear gloves all the time and he just always thinks she's cold. *Psychic Projection- able to form things out of energy (kind of like Green Lantern) *Invisibility- partner this with her mental powers and maybe she's used to not being noticed, until she moves in with Rum * Power Manipulation- she can copy the power of whoever she is fighting with or against; can augment someone's powers if in contact with them somehow, etc. Or drain them of it

Ooooh the web thing for Rum sounds awesome! A great wink to his spinner persona.
When you said no super power, I thought about Megamind. Kind of always wanted a megamind AU of rumbelle, with him being sparkly disco lizard instead of blue.
I love all of Belle's powers and I wish I had Omni-Linguism for myself xD

Ooh, you've given me a lot of food for thought, guys! :-D I like the idea of spiderman-esque powers for Rum- given that his super name in this fic will be 'The Spinner', that would work quite well. And I've always liked invisibility as a superpower, though Belle's going to need some more combat oriented stuff as well... Hmm...

In the X-Men RP I did, Rumple was a mutant whose skin changed when he became a mutant, so he started hiding himself from the world. His other gift was teleportation.
Belle's gift was super-intelligence - the ability to remember everything she read - and also to sense other mutants presence.
She met Rumple when he was hiding out in the abandoned library; a place she loved to visit to train her own superpower.
It was something like that; but it's been a while since I thought about that plot so it might have been a little different.

Rum always imagined me as a mentalist with teleportation powers, and Belle, as a, super intelligent empatico who always knows the truth of how things happen

It could help to use some images of Dark Swan/Clippy Rumple as inspiration for the mutant/superhero AUs? They could be villains/superheroes with that look. XD

It might help to come up with limits to the powers they have (to help prevent plotholes, and to provide more story). Like, three second telepathy, or the ability to remember only a certain number of words read per day. That way they have to also be judicious in their use of powers.
You could also do some mostly nonsensical powers, like: -perfect makeup application -knowing when it's about to rain/snow/etc.--not being able to do anything about it, just knowing -playing possum (ability to appear dead for short amounts of time) -seeing ghosts/things other people can't see -ability to open any closed door -ability to only ever take good photos of themselves
Some others, a little more common: -x-ray vision -temporary shape-shifting -MacGuyvering (ability to create whatever is needed out of whatever is available) -talking to animals (but maybe only certain people can talk to certain animals)
I used to be in a writing group where we had an ongoing story about a group of unusual superheroes, and it taught me that you can make ANYTHING a superpower. We had one character whose entire superpower was that he could go into restaurants and stores without the required shirt/shoes. Another was a talking green llama. Another baked cookies that turned people into a variety of things. Another was sticky. So just take literally any trait and run with it.

-ability to only ever take good photos of themselves Barney Stinson had superpowers! The useless powers would be fun to explore, I think. And maybe find some actual use for them, even if its minimal

Oh, that's entirely my point--you can absolutely find actual uses for what seem like useless powers. Just knowing a character has a weird, mostly useless power will open up ideas for how to put them in situations where they can use it.
