So what do you folks listen to when you're writing? Anything inspire you, get you going? Keep you focused? Share your musical journeys here!
For me, I tend to listen to instrumental music. Some of my favorites:
Kaki King, especially her album Glow
Anything but Ludovico Einaudi. His latest album, Elements, just came out and so I'm listening to that while writing
George Winston, especially some of his older stuff (Autumn, Winter Into Spring)

I guess for me it depends on what I'm writing. But Jazz works best for me. I recently discovered Julie Fowlis, she sings in Scottish Gaelic and her music is beautiful. Owl city if I'm writing fluffy stuff tho

I listen to a lot of instrumental music while writing.
One of my favorite soundtracks is to the game of "Ori and the Blind Forest" - I've never played the game but the music is amazing. Game music is also especially written to keep you focused, so I would really advice game music to write to. And Ori and the Blind Forest just sounds magical and exciting, full of heart, so perfect for most of my stories.
There are also a few mixes of instrumental music I listen to. I have the links to the music at home so I'll see if I can get it tonight for you guys. It's just mixes of film music in a certain genre; all gathered by the same person. So there's a folky film music mix and an adventurous one etc...

I tend to use soundtracks. Lately, I've been into Audiomachine and Two Steps From Hell. Both groups create/compose trailer music, and they have some really neat stuff. I discovered it on Pandora's film scores channel, and pretty much everything both groups put out is utterly awesome for writing.
I've learned the hard way not to listen to music with words when I type...I type so much faster than I think that I wind up typing words I hear, and you can imagine how that mucks with a story. (I did that on a paper in high school once because my dad was watching TV in the room the computer was in, and man, was that fun to explain.)

I can listen to music with lyrics if its not in the language I'm writing in. If I'm writing in spanish I listen to music in english, if I'm writing in english I listen to music in german or gaelic. Otherwhise i get too distracted by the music xD

I'm in the instrumental camp, too. It may sound weird, but Christmas instrumental music works really well for me. Though if I'm writing something dark/angsty, I have a mix of darker instrumental music I've cultivated over time. I use a lot of soundtrack instrumental music.
I need pop music for brainstorming, though. The lyrics really help me churn out ideas.

I'm really into Ludovico Einaudi too. My two favorites of his that I kind of have on a loop are I Giorni and Giorni Dispari. Otherwise, instrumental Beatles music really helps me focus, I have no idea why. It seems most of us are instrumental music kind of people.
